Alert! alert! new post :O

Wow, 18 months since my last post…and reading that, things have certainly changed! and all for the better.

Firstly, Lisa and I got married – very romantic affair really, it was sold to me that financially it made sense with the properties etc. As such, we got 2 witnesses, Lisa’s dad, and my mum and off to the registry office. We had the Muppet Show theme tune playing during the ceremony, then Lou Reed’s ‘Perfect Day’ (the only ‘sensible’ wedding ceremony song), follwed by Foo Fighters ‘Long Road to Ruin’. We left the registry office to the Muppets ‘Manamana’. Lisa got a ring, I got a ball and chain (seriously – I got a ball and chain, it’s not a euphemism).

So yeah, pretty big change right there.

Work has changed vastly too – for legal reasons I cannot discuss any settlement agreements or wrong doings.

After a couple of months working as a packer on a production line, I got a job doing some data analysis for a distribution company. I actually applied for a basic administration position but got a call back saying they thought I was over qualified for the position, but they’d created a new position for me (which is a huge ego boost for someone of my age).

I then took a job for Liebherr, a German company specialising in tower cranes. My manager had some odd ways of doing things which saw me leave there after only a couple of months. Once again, I was turned down for the original job I applied for, but was offered a different job to match my skills.

After mooching around for a couple of weeks, and Christmas starting to loom on the horizon, Lisa sent me a link one day for a job inside ABB. I applied, and we both agreed that to avoid any bias one way or another, I’d not mention her working for the company.

The application went in, was received with interest, and I underwent a telephone interview – I’m quite good on the phone, and have the knack of sounding knowledgeable about things I honestly know little of. I then received a further callback inviting me to an interview – this would be just before the Christmas break.

At this point, Lisa and I decided she should approach HR and let them know she had initiated the recruitment so she’d get the recruitment bonus (we thought this would be a couple of hundred pounds). HR told her yes, there was a bonus – Β£1000 if I was successful in the interview, and a further Β£1000 after 6 months.

Interview day comes around – a Friday (this is key). I arrived promptly for my interview and was met by Al (the manager of the section) who was dressed in jeans and t-shirt. Seeing my expression, he said, “I normally wear a shirt and most days a tie, but Friday is dress-down day.”

For the first time IN MY LIFE, I was the best dressed person in the company. The interview with me, Al, and the other Al went very well, and I was offered the job a couple of days later to start in the new year – January 11th in fact.

I was actually phoned on the 5th to ask if I’d like to attend some training they were holding that day which would be of use for me – having nothing better to do, I did this, and as such, became the first person to start work before my start date…

So, my new career as an Internal Proposals Engineer is a very interesting one – I’m learning the range of products offered by ABB, and was approached by the head of UK sales in late March to say he’d like me to attend some training in Italy in May. Now, in my head I was thinking “Hmm, my probation period runs until mid April, but I’m booked on some overseas training in May – I think I may have this job…”

Sure enough, a couple of weeks ago, Al turned to me and said “Paul, about your probation period”, I turned around and he continued “Yeah, you’re in…despite being a Spurs fan.” (he supports Chelsea).

Which brings me neatly to the current EPL – Spurs trailing Leicester at the top of the table, still (as I write this) mathematically possible for them to be champions – but what a season, what a difference the manager has made, and what effort the players have put in as a whole, they really are awesome to watch – like an unending white wave swarming over defences.

Lisa and I decided to book a holiday in September once the girls have gone back to school, we initially thought Gran Canaria, but due to the problems in North Africa and Syria, it seems everyone is now going to Spain and the Canary Islands. In a nutshell, I was sold on the idea of the lazy river at the hotel in Cancun, so we’re off to Mexico for 2 weeks – lovely stuff.

Cats: Gif has really settled in now, and even tolerates the other 2 cats being quite close to him.

Household media system: Although the plethora of storage devices still exist, we’re moving more onto streaming films/TV shows (the girls love the US Whose Line is it Anyway?).

We’re (Lisa) is now onto the final room in the extended house to be redecorated – our bedroom. Yesterday I was allowed (under supervision), to take out a brick cupboard that used to house the boiler, but was now empty and taking up space.

I’ll upload some pictures later of the wedding, and the house/garden. Until then, ciao

Back to normality

(Well, as close as I can get to normality before Lisa says it)

So, so busy at work: I’m in Bournemouth next Monday and Tuesday, got transport booked to ship my test equipment up to Prestwick where I’ll be for the whole of the following week, I have to arrange to get the test stuff shipped from there to Hahn where I’ll be the week after that…then I think I’ll be back in the office for a week (maybe – got to go see the Ryanair people in Dublin at some point).

I like being busy – the days fly by. The only trouble is I am so tired by 9pm (mumble, mumble, ‘old age’ mutter, mutter). Even my weekly ‘Curry Night’β„’ is being affected – I went out last night at 5.45pm and was back by 7.45pm. Admittedly, I was gonna watch the football, but ended up watching ‘Safe House’ (well, some of it – I was dropping off halfway through).

Can’t wait for a holiday 😐

Funniest site (for me) at the moment: Text from dog

Busy, busy, busy…

Since we got back to work after the break, it’s been non-stop with testing here and there.

Halfway through the month and I’ve still to go to Prestwick (that’ll be next Thursday), then off to Skavsta (Sweden) the following week. After those 2, I should have a bit of a break (by break, I mean be office bound for a month or so).

Just had an email regarding the schedule:

Drive to Prestwick?! OMG – 800 miles round trip with a shitload of work in between? um, I think I’ll fly thanks πŸ˜‰

Last time I was in Skavsta, it was July and the weather was beautiful. This time it’s the beginning of February and it’ll be COLD, so I might need to take a jacket πŸ˜› For Prestwick – well, it’s so mind numbingly boring up there, I’ll need valium or something 😐

EDIT: Just got my flight details through for Prestwick – I even get an overnight out of it πŸ™‚ (woo, great…nothing wrong with Scotland except for the fucking Scots – 1 in particular…). On a bright note, I’ll finally get to try haggis.

I can haz cawfee?

Today I have mostly been upping my caffeine intake…I’m considering strapping myself to my chair to stop myself bouncing off the walls.

Spoke to ‘the man in Singapore’ – Wang (stop giggling at the back) – about the site and he likes my ideas thus far πŸ™‚

After about 16 hours playing with ASP.net, I’ve decided to do the site from scratch in HTML/PHP with a little flash animation thrown in, then give him the source to inject the database stuff – I’m getting too old (and my workload is IMMENSE…no, I said WORKLOAD you pervs, my penis is at best average…) for this ‘learn a new language in a couple of days’ stuff.

Just over an hour left here at work, then home, quick bath, install some more programs on a mate’s computer I’ve been tripping over for the past couple of weeks so it’s ready to go back when he’s down this weekend, then off for a quick laptop repair jobby, then home to watch the next 2 episodes of Lost with a couple of cold beers, then a (relatively) early night…

I should do something this weekend other than go out drinking, but I don’t know what

Turdsday (or summat like that…)

Well, the snowy weather we were threatened with this week seems to have failed to arrive (woo!) – instead we have drizzly rain (ack). On the bright side though, at least it’s melting the stubborn bits of snow that are still dotted here and there, and no need to deice the car in the mornings! πŸ™‚

In other news, I’m still waiting for ‘The Talkβ„’’ – not sure whether she’s too busy to call or what…what is it with women? why can they not just say what they want and be done with it – who the fuck needs all this having to work out what they mean?

Looks like I’m gonna be signing up for some weekend work anyway – 12 hour shifts, the money will certainly help things out, and I think maybe I need some time alone to be honest.

In general work is going well right now – the work is coming in slowly, couple of sales have materialised, so we should be ok for a bit longer…all the line station testing should be coming up this month too – maybe some time out of the office for me?

Why do I get nagged for not blogging when Bu'er hasn't blogged in MONTHS?

It’s not fair I tell you…

And so, a blog πŸ™‚ shall I mention football? hmm…we gave away a 0-2 lead to end up drawing against Everton (and Defoe missed an extra time penalty that would have given us the win) so maybe not eh?

Work? shall I blog about work? much as I love my job – I don’t think so…

So, what I’ll ramble on with is my phone – the Nokia N97 πŸ™‚

It’s a lovely phone, and now I’ve managed to de-brand it (getting rid of the Vodafone crappy splash screen and useless link on the screen that you always tend to hit), and update the firmware – it’s fecking brilliant!

The touch screen is very good (not quite as good as the iPhone’s, but the best of the others), it’s fast opening apps, web browsing is faster than the iPhone (Marina has one and, being the geek I am, I opened my blog on both phones and mine was about 6 seconds quicker than hers πŸ˜› ).

I like the way the iPhone lists SMSs in a conversation format so you can follow the thread, rather than in a list – so I found an app for my phone to do that πŸ™‚

Also, my phone, with it’s 5 megapixel camera is FAR superior to the 2 megapixel offering on the Apple phone πŸ™‚

Um…that’s about all for now – have a couple of short stories:

Apparently I’m off to the theatre on Saturday – Marina has tickets for ‘Misanthrope‘. I’ve not been to the theatre before so it should be an experience (and Keira Knightley is in it so I can perv her). I suppose it makes a change from hanging about in pubs…

Mobile phones

For the last day I’ve had what can only be described as: FUCKING AWFUL SERVICE on my phone (Vodafone). Yesterday, it took me about 2 hours and countless reboots (IT cure-all: “Did you try turning it off and on again?”), before I could connect to the network – no way was I calling their Β£fuck-knows-how-much-a-minute ‘help’ line, so I gritted my teeth (and started reading my T&C) and accepted it…it seemed to work itself out.

Today, I had a few problems sending texts etc. and, being the kind hearted guy I am (generally – I’ve not mentioned the work thing yet, I’m trying to work through it*), I put it down to a temporary issue with Vodafone’s network and thought they’d sort it over the weekend…just got a text “Sorry, got no signal” from a fellow Vodafone (think I’ll refer to them as ‘gotnofone’ from now on). Bless…but she is blonde (and lovely πŸ™‚ )

I’m cooking boeuf bourguignon right now for tomorrow – it smells so good, and of course, half a bottle of wine for the pot, half for me…and then open another bottle for me πŸ™‚ so I’ve sat and drunk most of that while watching ‘Highlander’ (classic film IMO) and am now feeling very happy πŸ™‚ which is nice…

*Ah, yes…well, Tim (allegedly ‘Works Manager’ – couldn’t manage his way out of a fucking brothel – and he should know, he married the ugliest fucking Thai bird I’ve EVER seen)Β  is a cnut of the highest order (and I mean that as derogatory as I possibly can), and if he reads this – face up to me you knob – stop hiding behind the phone.

And breathe…aah πŸ™‚

Weeeee…

Just got in – yet another hectic day in the life of snee…

I’m off to the Munich Airshow next week πŸ™‚ 2 days of checking out the competition (for work!) and trying to sell our company’s services – should be fun, even if I do have to shave and dress in a shirt and trousers (and shoes! proper shoes!).

And believe me, when I say I love my job – it’s not just the travelling – I seriously love my job πŸ™‚

I’ve got a Led Zep Too gig to see Saturday night – think I’ve mentioned it before – apparently they’re really good…tickets cost me nothing, so it’ll just cost the petrol for whoever’s driving (certainly not gonna be me – I’m having a few beers) – result! πŸ™‚

So, the plan is: win the Lotto tonight (ha!), judging by the emails in today it shouldn’t be too taxing a day tomorrow, finish at 1 Friday…and the weekend starts there πŸ™‚ )

My waking thought this morning was: green eggs and ham – I’ve been thinking about this at moments during the day, it’s quite disturbing really…

Well, that’s about it – gonna go cook and soak in the bath (at different times). Ciao
