in answer to a comment – i thought it deserved a (drunken) post
I like the idea of being marooned on an island. I think the appeal of the TV show ‘Lost’ is just that – an island unknown and unseen to our ‘civilised’ world. OK, I’d miss computers for sure, but I’d love the fact that nobody is watching or tracking me. St Neots has far too many CCTV cameras – big brother is here and he’s real.
I remember talking with a friend when I was about 9 or so, I was hypothesising about how there would be cameras in just about everything..this was back in 1977 – does this make me a visionary?
In 1990 I was discussing the WWW as it was then with this 65 year old guy – he was so switched on. My current boss has admitted that he thought we both needed to be committed to asylums, but now realises we could see where it was going – fuck, all we needed was some finance and we could have been billionaires (not that I really care that much about money – I pay my bills, drink my beer and have a good time – job done. Although a few million in the bank wouldn’t go amiss) .
Anyway, Bertram (the old guy) made me realise I could do so much more – and I still am striving to do more. I have no idea whether he’s still alive or not, but I dedicate this blog entry to Bertram, one of many mentors I’ve had.
Thank you.
