WordPress: free hosting vs own hosted blog

I love WordPress – it’s not just a blogging platform, it’s a full featured CMS (that’s Content Management System). I’ve been using it for years now – firstly as an installation on my own server, then as a free service at WordPress.com, and now, once again hosted on my server.

The advantages of hosting it yourself are the ability to use javascript (really good for tracking hits etc.) and a multitude of plugins and themes (yes, you have these on the hosted platform, just not as many).

The only downside is I have to update plugins etc. manually (my host – 1 and 1 internet – doesn’t allow the auto update feature) – something I’ve just done…it took me about 3 minutes so it’s no hardship.

As I mentioned, WP is a full CMS – this is something I’m ‘playing’ with for some other projects (both for work and personal use), and the fact it’s available for free is awesome 🙂

Support the unpaid contributors to WP – if you use a plugin/theme, contact the creator and thank them (or even donate cash money!) – I personally know that a few words of thanks from people who use your programs/scripts goes a long way to making my their day.
