A (kind of) serious post – reviewing local food places:
Cornerstone Cafe (aka: the christian cafe).
So, Smiler and I had both noticed they do a £2.50 breakfast special, but neither of us had tried it…so I decided I was gonna be the guinea pig.
Now, with retrospect, going into a christian cafe with a t shirt emblazoned with “No-one gives a fuck about your facebook status” while semi-pissed on Guinness wasn’t the best plan – following this up with trying to chat the waitress up (VERY nice figure on her…), probably wasn’t too clever either.
Anyway – short answer: don’t go there – try the Taliban cafe on the square – IMO, the best place for a breakfast in St Neots (the Gash‘s black pudding is very dry, although as a plus point, you can order beer with your breakfast).
There – who says blogging can’t be informative? 🙂
*Edit: I may have been somewhat hasty in my conclusions – I will try the place again and maybe this could be a new theme for me, checking out the best brekkie places locally?*
Heh…snee – providing a service to the food loving St Neots peeps
Would you go back if they offered you a free coffee & cake on me?
For now I’ll continue my quest to find the perfect all day breakfast…
Fair enough. Probably a dangerous question but… why do you call t’other place the Taliban cafe?
As a joke – same as you’re the christian cafe – the guys there are (mainly) turkish, nice guys, but that’s their local ‘tag’
To be honest, I will probably visit your place again, but I wasn’t really impressed by the wait, and the fact it was kinda smokey in there…food WAS ok for the price, but, I dunno…I’ll ‘review’ t’other places again and get back to you – maybe I was abrupt in my conclusion for you 🙂
PS: the gash really does have dry black pudding…and I do appreciate your feedback, as I guess you appreciate mine.
Cheers!
Am I reading this correctly? You are admitting you may have been wrong???? Who Are You????
No, I said I may have been hasty – not wrong 🙂 now go and make a nice cup of tea…
Hi Paul, you write some interesting ‘waffle’. I’d really like to know whether you had a good welcome at Cornerstone. You mentioned three things that ‘might not have been a great idea’. How did they react?
I wonder if the smoky haze is because the cooking temperature is too high, maybe they can adjust that. I haven’t tried the breakfast yet. You said it wasn’t bad – What are your views on value for money, quality, quantity on the plate? You thought the food was slow arriving, was the place full at the time, half full, almost empty?
Any other suggestions for making it a better experience?
You realise that at this rate you could become the St Neots professional food critic! 🙂
@Phil – Didn’t realise you were offering free cakes. Can I have one?
I certainly seemed to wait a long time for my food (I think about 25 minutes?), and the smoky haze was slightly off-putting. Checking out the waitress’ bum DID offset this somewhat 😉
For what it’s worth – my opinion overall on the breakfast:
Loadsa beans – ok, I like beans, but I’d rather half the amount and an extra egg maybe? the bacon was done to perfection :), sausages were a little under-cooked, mushrooms – ack, horrible slimy things I’m not really keen on (but they were tasty).
I’d suggest maybe some hash browns with the meal – soak up some of that bean juice, and a choice (the Gash does) between mushrooms or black pudding – but GOOD black pudding…
what’s black pudding?
You’re so not gonna love me for this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_pudding
