Ah Tuesday…don't you just love bank holiday weekends?
It was the weekend of (what remains of) St Neots Carnival.
Now, back when I was a kid (and the world was still black and white blah, blah, blah), this used to be held on Priory park – very handy, seeing as I lived just over the road from the park – and was a long weekend full of funfairs, fast food, and bustling crowds.
Of course, as kids, we used to make a bit of money afterwards by combing the ground for dropped change.
This all changed when the local council, in their wisdom, decided to change the venue to the Riverside park (lovely place, full of trees, water, ducks, swans – you get the picture), which is actually a flood plain.
As the years went on, so the carnival became less and less of what is once was – there’s no procession, very few stalls or shows – it’s basically just a funfair now.
I personally believe it’s downfall came when they changed the venue – yes, I know the riverside park is more central, but there was an awesome amount of parking at priory park (and let’s face it, a mile is hardly a long way to walk).
I didn’t fancy getting my feet wet by wandering around the riverside, so I stayed away…only went out twice over the weekend – quick early pint Saturday to watch the match (also won £70 on the fruit machine – woo!), and yesterday I got bored so came into work for an hour (sad huh?).
